Creating An Outdoor Oasis In Your Backyard

If the past year has taught us anything, it’s just how valuable it can be to have a home you enjoy spending time in. And if you’re fortunate enough to have a yard, garden, patio, deck, or even a balcony, you have the ability to extend your living space beyond the walls of your home. Make sure you’re taking advantage of that bonus living space by turning that patio, courtyard, or lawn into a home oasis with these tips.

Create Some Privacy

A little privacy goes a long way when it comes to creating a relaxing environment in your outdoor space. Assess your location and consider if any of the following elements could help you create a sense of seclusion from the outside world and nosy neighbors: a privacy fence, a canopy, sheer drapes, plants

Establish Designated Areas

If you have enough space to work with, create designated sections for lounging, dining, conversing, and/or recreation. Finding the right outdoor furniture pairings can be a huge help here. Set that furniture up in a way that creates spaces with intention and purpose, and consider outdoor rugs, potted plants, and other accessories to help define each space. This is especially useful when you have a lot of square footage that you want to pull together into a cohesive design. If you’re working with limited space, even a comfy hammock and a small bistro table set can go a long way.

Add a Water Feature

Nothing soothes like flowing water. Whether it be a small tabletop fountain or a dramatic water fall for your pool, a water feature has an immediate impact on the mood of your outdoor space and is easily scalable to match your budget and space limitations.

Incorporate Lighting

Just because you’re outdoors doesn’t mean you should be left in the dark at night. Lighting makes an incredible difference in an outdoor space. Hang outdoor string lights (whether they be commercial grade or spare Christmas twinkle lights) and include a fire feature (whether that be a fire pit, tiki torches, or a few candles). Warm up that outdoor space both literally and figuratively with some light.

Be Thoughtful With Plant Selection

Plants bring interest and serenity to any outdoor space. If you’re working with just a balcony or deck with little-to-no yard, plants are even more impactful. But be mindful with your selection. If you don’t have a green thumb, choose plants that are low maintenance (nothing ruins a relaxing vibe like dried out plant corpses). Also choose plants that pair well with your specific location. If your outdoor space doesn’t get a lot of sun, make sure you’re choosing plants that thrive in shade. If you’re in a desert climate, succulents can be your best friend. And if your outdoor space is tiny, you might not want to choose that oversized potted tree.

As you piece together your perfect outdoor oasis, remember to put your personal spin on it, and consider how to carry the interior design you’ve established within your home into your yard, patio, courtyard, or deck.
