Spring Cleaning Checklist for A Fresh 2021 Home

Spring is upon us! And with the warm air and sunny days comes a chance for a fresh start and a clean home. Shed those winter blues and get ready to welcome Summer with a nice deep cleaning of the home this Spring.

But before you dive into all that laundry, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming and dusting, first take time to clear any clutter and donate those things you no longer need, from souvenirs that are collecting dust to unworn clothing taking up precious space in your closet. You’ll feel lighter already, and the best way to prevent future mess is to eliminate the things that cause the mess in the first place!

Okay, once you’ve unburdened yourself from possessions that no longer serve you, it’s time to do some deep cleaning! Not sure where to start? Use our master checklist below as a guide to your 2021 Spring cleaning adventures. To begin, open up those windows nice and wide, and get some fresh air in that house!

Here’s to more daylight, fresh air, and a light start to the new season!

The Kitchen

  • Declutter counters and cabinets, and donate unused appliances, dishes, and utensils
  • Wipe down counters, cabinets, shelving, and tabletops
  • Empty refrigerator/freezer, toss bad or expired food, wipe down shelves and drawers, and replace food in an organized manner
  • Scrub sink and faucet, and replace musty sponges or rags
  • Deep clean oven & stove
  • Sweep and mop floor
  • Clean baseboards, windowsills, doors, and walls of dust, grease, or fingerprints
  • Clean windows
  • Dust hanging light fixtures and/or ceiling fans
  • Empty trash and recycling

The Bathroom

  • Declutter counters and cabinets, and donate unused/unopened hair appliances, linens, towels, and products
  • Wipe down counters and cabinets
  • Scrub sink and faucet
  • Deep clean shower and toilet
  • Wash floor mats and used towels
  • Empty trash
  • Clean mirrors
  • Clean windows
  • Clean baseboards, windowsills, doors, and walls of dust, water stains, or fingerprints
  • Sweep and mop floor
  • Dust light fixtures
  • Clean ventilation fan of dust build-up

The Bedroom

  • Declutter closets, bureaus, and storage bins, and donate unused clothing, jewelry, bags, and accessories
  • Clean out and reorganize the space under the bed
  • Wash all linens (pillow cases, sheets, comforters, throw blankets, pet beds, etc.)
  • Wash clothing (finally dry clean those special items!)
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs if applicable
  • Sweep and mop hard floors if applicable
  • Clean baseboards, windowsills, doors, and walls of dust or fingerprints
  • Clean windows
  • Dust light fixtures and/or ceiling fans
  • Wipe down hard surfaces like bureaus, vanities, and bedside tables

The Living Room

  • Declutter side tables, shelves, mantles, and other surfaces, and donate items you don’t need
  • Wipe down tables, shelves, mantles, and other surfaces
  • Deep clean fireplace as we transition out of winter (a good time to get annual fireplace inspection)
  • Remove and wash covers for couch cushions, armchair cushions, and decorative pillows
  • Wash throw blankets, packing away the heavy winter throws for the season
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs if applicable
  • Sweep and mop hard floors if applicable
  • Clean baseboards, windowsills, doors, and walls of dust or fingerprints
  • Clean windows
  • Dust light fixtures and/or ceiling fans

The Dining Room

  • Declutter credenzas, curio cabinets, buffets, and/or dry bars, and sell/donate any dishware, glassware, etc. you don’t need
  • Wipe down credenzas, curio cabinets, buffets, and/or dry bars
  • Wash table cloth, place mats, fabric napkins, and/or table runner
  • Wipe down dining table and chairs, vacuuming seat cushions if applicable
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs if applicable
  • Sweep and mop hard floors if applicable
  • Clean baseboards, windowsills, doors, and walls of dust or fingerprints
  • Clean windows
  • Dust light fixtures and/or ceiling fans

The Garage

  • Declutter! As a storage room, the garage tends to collect a lot of miscellany. Donate/sell/give away the things you don’t need to free up space.
  • Clear cobwebs and dust from shelving, lighting, etc.
  • Consider hanging large items like bikes or sleds from the ceiling with heavy duty ceiling hooks
  • Consider hanging gardening tools like rakes, brooms, and shovels on the wall to get them off the floor
  • Sweep floor
  • Clean up oil stains on the floor (check out this article for tips)
  • Organize storage bins, tool boxes, etc. to guarantee easy access and maintenance of organization
  • Add additional shelving if needed
  • Fix or tune up any gardening or utility tools

The Exterior

  • Power wash front door, walkways, windows, siding, porches, patios, decks, and driveways
  • Consider fresh coats of paint for the front door, shutters, garage doors, etc.
  • Clean welcome mat
  • Clean up oil stains on driveway (check out this article for tips)
  • Mow lawn
  • Weed the garden and yard
  • Trim overgrown bushes
  • Prune trees for healthy growth
  • Refresh mulch if applicable
  • Transplant any plants that have outgrown their pots
  • Clean and treat pool if applicable
  • Clean mailbox
  • Clean exterior light fixtures and replace burnt out bulbs if necessary
